Chapter 14: Release

I was still on the town hall steps when I heard the singing.

It came around the corner of the square, slow and low, from twenty throats.

The church choir walked up Main Street in their burgundy robes, with winter coats pulled on over the top.

The pastor led them in his gray sweater, carrying a hymnal in one hand.

Behind the choir came the man in the Carhartt jacket, and the diner owner in her green apron, and the candle seller from the market.

Behind them came half a dozen strangers who had only heard.

They stopped on the sidewalk in front of the lockup and finished the verse.

Then the pastor climbed the steps and looked at me with his tired eyes.

"Is he in there?"

"Second cell," I said. "On a complaint from Dale."

"Then I think I'd like to see the deputy."

The deputy came out before anyone knocked.

He had clearly watched them through the frosted glass.

"Pastor, I can't have a crowd on the steps."
