Chapter 16: The Pie
Brooke held up her phone, and the screen glowed in the dim garage.
"Read it," she said. "Go on."

Brooke, honey, three weeks as Alexis. Wear the blue, say little, and be yourself again on the 28th. Love, H.
The second was from a number saved as W.
Lyle. Hold the name until the gala, then step aside with the check. W.
Under them lay a photo of a two-page contract, signed at the bottom by Grover Gaillard and Stanford Ashworth in the same green ink.
I sent all three to my own phone before I handed hers back.
My knees went soft, and I leaned against a concrete pillar.
"Stand-ins," Lyle said, pleased with himself again.
"Three weeks, a check apiece. Two decoys, so the real kids could meet under their own names."
"And you kept going."
"Do you know what it is to be the heir for two years?" Lyle smiled. "I'm not stepping aside for a check."
Brooke took her phone back.
