Chapter 22: Their Terms
On Monday morning there was a pie on the steps of the test kitchen.
It sat on a folded gray overcoat, cherry, with a note tucked under the tin.
Two old men. Zero cameras. Take your time. H. and W.
I picked up the pie, carried it inside and put it in the walk-in freezer.
"Not yet," I told it.
Gavin was already at the long steel table with his sleeves rolled, writing on a legal pad.
He wore a clean shirt and the same crooked tooth, and a pencil behind his ear that he had borrowed from my drawer.
"Stanford's lawyer left papers at seven," he said. "My voting shares, signed. And a note."
"What does the note say?"
"It says, Use me." He turned the page face down.
"He also left a check for the dairy farmer, to be handed over in person."
"Grover called me at six," I said.
"Did you answer?"
