I went downstairs in Gavin's shirt and found two chairmen frying eggs.
Stanford stood at my stove with a dish towel tucked into his belt.
Grover sat at the table, cutting cherries into a bowl, with his big hands moving carefully around the knife.
A cherry pie sat on the counter, still steaming.
"We let ourselves in," said Stanford, without turning.
"How?"
"Grover has had a key since you were twelve."
"I was going to mention it," said Grover.
Grover looked up, and his eyes went wet at once.
"We came to make breakfast," he said. "That's all. We won't stay."
"You're going to stay."
Both of them went still.
I pulled out a chair opposite my grandfather and sat down.
"You can have coffee," I said. "That's all I'm offering. Coffee, at my table, this morning."
"That's more than I deserve," said Grover.
