Chapter 12: The Fitting

Devon's dress shop was in Sandusky, in a brick building with lace curtains and a bell on the door.

I stood on a little round platform in a pale green gown with pins in the waist while a woman with a measuring tape circled me.

"Hold still," the woman said around the pins.

"I'm holding."

"She's beautiful," Devon said from the velvet chair.

She had her coffee in one hand and a folder in her lap.

She had asked me to be her maid of honor at the charter desk on Monday, with her whole face lit up, and said she had wanted a girl to stand next to since she was twelve.

I had said yes, because it was the best place from which to watch her.

I was not proud of it.

It had been six days since the guardrail.

Gabe had parked at the yard, said he was sorry and gone into the shed.

He had not answered a text since.

I had not told him I was coming here.

In the mirror my face was pale and my hair was loose.

"I love it on you," Devon said. "Green is your color."

"Thank you."

"I'm sorry about the clip, by the way."

My stomach dropped.

"What clip?"

"The little green one." She reached into her purse and held it out on her palm. "I found it on the floor of Gabe's boat. I forgot to give it back. I figured it was yours."
