Chapter 6: Coffee for Two

I woke up to boots on the ladder.

The aft cabin was gray with early light and Gabe's side of the berth was empty.

I had spent Saturday night on the Carol Ann too, and I was wearing his flannel shirt and nothing else.

A cheerful voice floated down through the hatch.

"Honey? You up? I brought the good coffee!"

I stopped breathing.

Gabe stood in the galley with his jeans on and his shirt in his hands.

He looked at me through the open cabin door, put one finger to his lips and pulled the door shut.

It did not close all the way.

It left a crack as wide as my hand.

"You're back early," I heard him say.

"My sister's husband snores. I left at four."

I heard the hatch bang and a cup being set down.

Then the sound of a kiss, a long one, and I pushed my back against the cabin wall and shut my eyes.

I had no right to mind it.

I minded it very much.

"You look tired," Devon said.

"Long week."

"Poor baby. Sit. I wrote it all down."

Paper rustled.

"Okay, flowers. I was thinking white and yellow, because those are the colors on the sign at the charter desk. And I want it on the dock, not at the church. Is that dumb?"

"It's not dumb."

"Stan can walk me down the dock. I already asked him."

"Devon."

"He cried, Gabe. Right in the office. He said he'd be proud."
