Elder Ma stepped down from his palanquin at the main gate.

He wore the long black robe with the crimson lining, and the jade ring on his thumb caught the morning light.

His silver hair was oiled and knotted high, and he smelled of sandalwood from ten paces away.

Ye-han stood at the Leader's right hand in full red, with his fan folded and his face arranged.

It was the best face he owned.

It was a lie, and he had lied with it since he was six.

"Young Lord," said Ma.

He bowed to Ye-han, in front of four hundred sect masters, lower than a regent bows to anyone.

"You have grown thin."

"The food is plain here, Uncle."

"We will fix that."

Ma turned to Gyeong-wook with both hands pressed together.

"Leader Do. I come in mourning, under the ninth seal, to bring my lord's son to the rites at the Citadel.

"I would not trouble your Hall with my men.

"But the roads are not kind to a regent in grief."

Two hundred riders sat their horses on the causeway behind him, not moving.

The Hall Elder was already at Ma's elbow.

"The Hall of Dawn is honored," he said, bent nearly double.

Ye-han had seen him bow to Gyeong-wook.

He bowed to Ma.

"The Hall will host the regent as long as he likes," said Gyeong-wook.

His voice gave nothing away.

"The Young Lord's mourning is not yet done."
