Chapter 24: Not a Hostage
"Ask me properly," Ye-han said.
Gyeong-wook blinked.
"I did."
"You asked me lying down, with your come on my thigh.
"I have standards."
Gyeong-wook sat up in the huge bed with the sheet round his waist, and looked at him with that terrible grave face.
Then he got off the mattress and knelt on the cold floor beside it, in the lamplight, with his hands open on his thighs.
"Seol Ye-han," he said.
"Marry me.
"No seals, no elders, no hundred nights.
"I will not hold your blood.
"I will only hold you, if you will let me."
Ye-han looked at him for as long as he could stand it.
It was, he thought, nearly a full breath.
"You may," he said.
They were married eleven days later, on the same flagstones where Ye-han had first stepped down from a palanquin.
He walked in on his own feet.
He wore the wedding red again, the full silk with the gold chain at the collar.
His kohl was a little smudged, because he had been laughing in the mirror.
The courtyard was full.
On the left side stood the Cult, a hundred and fifty in black with crimson sashes.
The heavy captain at the front was trying not to cry.
On the right stood the Alliance in grey, four hundred sect masters in rows.
At the very end of the front row stood the man in green who had once been asked about his daughter in Haeju.
He nodded to Ye-han.
Ye-han nodded back, kindly.
