Chapter 24: The Term
In April the first hive sat on the bluff behind a windbreak of cedar boards.
Mikkel stood three feet from it in my spare veil with his hands held out from his sides.
"They're looking at me," he said.
"They're looking at the flowers on the creek," I said.
"The one on my sleeve is looking at me."
"Then don't swat it."
A bee walked up his glove, considered his wrist, and flew off.
Anders stood behind him, bareheaded, with the smoker in his hand and the sun on his rolled sleeves.
"You are a coward," he said fondly.
"I'm a Dane. We don't do this."
I laughed, and the whole hive hummed.
A car engine ground up the north road.
It was a small gray sedan, and it stopped at the gate.
The eldest judge of the pack got out of it, seventy years old and slow.
She wore a black wool coat and carried a handbag on her arm.
She came up the path with her stick and stopped in front of us.
She looked at the hive, and at the veil, and at the sleeves, and at the scars.
"Miss Tvedt," she said.
"Ma'am."
"I came for my honey."
