Chapter 21: The Tail Takes a Side

Caspian's POV

The wolf hit me in the chest and took me off my feet.

I rolled with it across the grass, and the old stitches in my shoulder tore.

I felt them go.

I did not care.

Garrick's teeth snapped an inch from my throat, and I put my forearm against his jaw and held.

He was bigger than I was, and heavier, and he had waited five years for this.

"Carys," I said, through my teeth. "Behind the wall."

"I am behind your tail!"

She was not.

She was standing thirty feet away with a ledger under her arm, shouting figures at the Elders.

I could not afford to look.

I got a knee under the wolf and threw him, and he landed on his feet.

He circled.

I circled with him, and my tail dragged along the grass behind me, heavy and slow.

It was not working.

I had trained for years with that tail, and tonight it hung off me heavy and slow.

It did not strike, and it did not coil.

It waited.

"What is wrong with you?" I muttered.

The tail twitched, once, toward the wall.

Garrick lunged.

I met him with both arms, and we went down in fur and claws.

His weight pinned me.

His jaws closed on my already torn shoulder.

White pain ran down my arm.

For a moment I thought, with great clarity, that I wanted to tell her once more that I would choose her without the mark.
