Chapter 5: Closed Out

"Well," Felix said, drawing the word out. "If it isn't Mr. Draven. What a coincidence."

Caspian did not look at him.

His eyes stayed on mine, and every word came out through his teeth.

"Carys. Who is he?"

It was the first time he had said my first name since he woke up.

Something in my chest twisted, and I did not like it.

"A friend," I said. "This is Felix. Felix, this is, um."

"Her husband," Caspian said.

"Her soon to be ex-husband," Felix said pleasantly, and his tail tip brushed my wrist.

Caspian saw it.

His hand turned white at the knuckles.

"We have not dissolved the bond," he said, in a voice I had never heard from him, "and you are already making friends like this."

I stared at him.

He had forgotten me without my permission, sent his lawyers to my door and put a billion dollars in my account.

And now he wanted to tell me who I could sit with?

"We're about to be done," I said. "I'm planning ahead."

"Planning ahead," he repeated.

"There's a ranked list," Felix said helpfully. "She has footnotes."

Caspian turned his head slowly toward Felix.

The wood under the booth gave a long, low crack.

"Okay," I said, standing up.

Five years had taught me that the only way to stop a serpent was to make the room boring.

"We're leaving. Felix, thank you. The drink is on me."

I pulled a bill from my wallet and set it on the table with the notebook open next to it.
