Chapter 8: Ms. Prescott

Elias's POV

Adeline waited in the lobby of Pike & Orrin for three hours.

Two of the partners there had hired me the week after the courthouse, because they had read my portfolio before they learned whose husband I was.

I didn't know she was downstairs until six, when the receptionist stopped me at the elevator.

"Someone's been sitting in the lobby since three," she said quietly. "I told her you were in a client meeting. She said she would wait."

I walked out through the glass doors at the end of the day.

Adeline stood beside the revolving door, in the black coat, with the wind pulling her hair loose.

The cold had taken the color out of her face.

She hurried toward me as soon as she saw me.

"Elias, we need to talk."

"Business hours are over, Ms. Prescott," I said. "I don't have anything professional to discuss."

She stopped walking.

In seven years, I had never once called her by her last name.

She recovered and held out a thick folder.

"It's the new company history," she said. "Larkspur's. Your name is back beside mine as a co-founder, and every photograph from the warehouse years is in it again."

She turned to a tabbed page.

"There's an equity offer behind that, and a role for you. Whatever title you want."
