Chapter 13: The Warrant

"Say that again," Anthony said into the phone, and pulled the sheet over my knees without looking at me.

I lay still beside him with my pulse loud in my ears and listened to his father.

"Her lawyers called the firm at eleven," said the voice from the speaker. It was dry and unhurried, a man who dictated letters in his sleep. "If your statement surfaces anywhere, Constance will say it was forged by a bitter associate. She will say the associate is you."

"I signed it. I was there."

"You also signed a retraction. Which of the two will a judge believe?"

Anthony's jaw, still dark where I had hit it, went tight.

"I'm not calling to tell you to be quiet," his father said. "I'm calling because she knows. Do what you like with that."

The line went dead.

"He didn't tell you to stop," I said.

"No." Anthony put the phone face down on the nightstand. "That frightens me more than if he had."

He turned and laid his hand flat on my stomach, warm and still, and I covered it with mine and did not sleep for a long time.

At nine the next morning the surgeon's flat on Beacon Hill had seven chairs in it, four of them borrowed from a neighbor.

I stood at the end of the table in yesterday's dress and told them the plan.

Saturday night, Hollin Point, two hundred guests, Constance's own ballroom.

"We speak in the order of the night," I said. "Pianist, senator's son, architect, surgeon. Then the driver, then Anthony. The heir is last."
