Chapter 11: The Offer

Casey's POV

His note said back by dark, and he was back at six, with the sun still on the water.

I met him at the door with the court papers in one hand and the boat invoice in the other.

"You left me a grocery list," I said.

"It said lock the door."

"It said eat something."

"Did you?"

"I ate two eggs and I hated you the whole time."

He took that with a nod and came inside and shut the door behind him.

He looked like he had not slept either.

"You went to your father," I said, "about my petition, without me."

"Yes."

"I am not a thing that gets argued over by men in a glass room."

"No," he said. "You're not. I should have woken you."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because I wanted to hit somebody, and I knew if you came I'd have to watch him say it to your face."

I put the papers down on the table.

"What did he say?"

He told me, and he did not soften it.

His father had thrown the evaluation in the fire and ordered the doctor struck from every record in New Jersey.

And his father wanted me married to the man who stood behind my chair.

"I said no," Renzo said.

"You said no."

"I told him I would not ask you for anything while you were still wearing my brother's name. He can keep his clause."

I stood very still.

"That's what you went to say."

"That, and to stop your mother-in-law's doctor," he said. "I thought you'd want the second one done."

I did.

I wanted it so badly my eyes stung.

He was still holding something back, and I could see it.
