Chapter 5: The Clause

Renzo filled a dish towel with ice from the freezer and held it out to me.

"Put it on your arm. Then I'll tell you."

"Tell me first."

"You'll want to sit."

I sat at the table with my arm on the wood and the ice against the marks, and he took the other chair.

He kept the whole table between us, and I understood it was on purpose.

"My father is seventy tomorrow," he said. "He has a bad heart and a lawyer who visits the house."

"I know about his heart."

"Then you know it's why he's been writing things down."

He turned his hands over on the table.

They were scarred across the knuckles and looked like they'd spent years on engines.

"For thirty years the family has gone to whoever my father chose. The restaurants, the trucks, the accounts, the people who owe him. Last spring he changed the paper."

"Changed it how?"

"Whoever fathers his first legitimate grandchild takes it all." He said the words flatly. "Legitimate means born inside a marriage. Dario is married. I am not."

I put the ice down.

"So Dario didn't marry me for the family," I said slowly. "He married me six years ago because he loved me."

"Yes."

"And now he needs the baby."

"Yes."

"And Adele told the whole chat to keep me calm."

"Until it's born," Renzo said.

I sat still.

The woodstove ticked in the corner, and a floorboard creaked somewhere under us.

"I'm a container," I said. "I'm a uterus in a cardigan."
