Chapter 6: A Different Doctor
At nine on Sunday morning I sat on a paper-covered table in a Scranton hospital with my sleeve rolled up.
I had not slept, and I did not want to hurry anything, so I had asked to be seen before the dinner.
Renzo had driven me without being asked and sat in the waiting room with a magazine he did not read.
The doctor on call was a woman in her fifties with gray hair and reading glasses pushed up on her head.
She looked at the four marks on my arm for a long moment.
"Who did this?"
"My husband's cousin."
"Are you in danger at home?"
"Yes," I said.
The word came out easier than I expected.
She did not blink.
She took a camera from a drawer and photographed my arm from three sides, with a ruler beside the bruise.
"I'm going to write down what you told me, in your words, and the time and date," she said. "It goes in your chart, and no one but you and a court can ask for it."
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me. Lie back, and let's see what's in there."
The gel was cold on my stomach.
She slid the wand low and watched the screen, and I watched her face instead of the screen.
For a moment she said nothing, and my chest started to close.
"There," she said, and turned the monitor to me.
A small gray shape sat in the dark, no bigger than a grape.
In the middle of it a tiny light fluttered, fast and steady.
She pressed a button, and the room filled with a quick soft rush of sound.
