Chapter 15: The Photographs

Elliot's POV

I saw Hannah in the doorway over Lorna's shoulder, and for a second I thought my medication had gone wrong.

"Lorna came at nine," my mother said behind me, low. "For the visit hour. I let her in."

"I can go," Lorna said.

"Stay in the kitchen," I said. "Please. Mom, take Sam to the corner shop for milk."

My mother looked at Hannah, her expression softening for an instant before closing again.

She put Sam's coat on him and took his hand.

Lorna went into the kitchen and stood against the fridge with her arms folded.

I took Hannah to the front room and sat down, because my stomach was still singing from yesterday.

"You were hit," she said at once. "Let me see it."

"It held. What are you doing in Seaview?"

"I gave a statement this morning."

She stayed on her feet.

She wore a clean shirt, and her ponytail was damp from the street.

She held her phone out in front of her with both hands.

"I have to tell you something before it's in a file," she said. "The night Sam came in, I photographed the burn. I didn't report it for three days."

I did not say anything.

"I had no proof. I had a boy who said he knocked a kettle over, and a father who cried and called himself clumsy. I was afraid that if I said it and it came to nothing, he'd be punished for it."
