Chapter 12: The Order

I pulled on my clothes in the loft and came down the ladder with my hair still wild from the night.

Brigid had already planted herself in the doorway beside Ewan, with her stick across her knees.

The Council envoy stood in the snow with his four armed men.

He looked past Ewan at me, and his eyes went flat and careful.

"Miss Corvane," he said. "You will come with us."

"No," I said.

"This is not a request. The Old Writ names every silver wolf a ward of the Council. You were found by Strathmore, in Strathmore's keeping, and he has an obligation to deliver you."

"Strathmore has no obligation to anyone," Ewan said.

"You hold a seat on the Council of Nine, Alpha. You swore the oath."

"I did."

"Then you are commanded by that oath to hand her over."

I saw Ewan's hand tighten on the door frame.

It was the one thing I had forbidden him.

Never give me a command.

Now a man with a silver pin was telling him to give one to me, with the whole Council behind him.

He didn't look at me.

He reached up to his collar, where a small silver pin shaped like a stag's head sat over his heart.

He unpinned it.

He held it in his palm for a moment.

"I swore that oath when I was nineteen," he said. "I swore it because I thought the Council kept wolves safe."

"Alpha," the envoy said sharply.

"I read the record of the last silver wolf. I read how she died in the Hold at twenty-four."

"That is sealed."

"I know. I broke the seal."

The envoy's face changed.

Ewan opened his hand and dropped the pin in the snow.

It sank out of sight.

"I resign my seat," he said, clearly, so the four armed men could hear him. "Write it down. I will not hand her over, and I will not command her. Not today, not ever."
