By five o'clock the table held nineteen people, and Bernie had run out of chairs.
The furnace man brought two from the basement.
The mailman set a folding stool at the corner and declared it the best seat in the house.
The sisters from upstairs sat side by side with their elbows touching.
The young couple's baby ate a roll with both fists.
The best man arrived last, in jeans, holding a bakery box.
"I got fired this morning," he said at the door.
"Good," said Bernie. "Sit by me. There's pot roast."
He sat.
The marketing director came in at ten past, in a plain gray coat.
A woman I had never met followed a step behind her.
She was in her thirties, small and sharp-eyed, with a scarf wound three times around her neck.
She stopped in the dining room doorway.
The whole table noticed at the same moment that she was a stranger.
"I'm the eleventh," she said.
I put down my fork.
