Chapter 6: Lesson Three

I went to his loft that night to end it.

I had the speech ready in the cab.

It was short and reasonable, and it began with the words "I think we should stop."

Anson opened the door in a gray T-shirt, barefoot, with a pencil behind his ear.

"You didn't text," he said.

"I need to ask you something."

"Come in."

I walked into the middle of the floor and turned around.

He closed the door and leaned against it with his arms crossed, and my speech disappeared.

"Why did you never deny it?" I said instead. "All those stories about you. Not once, in six years."

His face didn't change.

"Is that what Whitley said to you?"

"Answer me."

"Callie." His voice was gentle. "Come here."

"Anson."

"You came here to end this. I can see it on you."

I opened my mouth.

"Take your coat off first."

I should have refused.

I took it off.

He crossed the floor and kissed me before it reached the ground.

It wasn't slow before.

His hand was in my hair and his mouth was hungry, and I forgot every word I had.

When he lifted his head, I was holding his shirt in both fists.

"That wasn't an answer," I said.

"It's the only one I have tonight."

I looked at him.

His gray eyes were open and bare, with something hurt moving behind them, and I knew I would not ask again.

Not tonight.

"Lie down," I said.

He raised an eyebrow.

"On the bed. On your back. I'm taking the lesson this time."

"Callie..."

"Rule one," I said. "You say what you want out loud. What do you want, Anson?"
