Chapter 16: The Feast Hall
The Sons of Italy hall smelled of fried fish, anise cookies, and warm bread.
I could smell it from the sidewalk.
On Saint Joseph's day, the whole city came.
Long tables ran down the center of the hall.
On the far wall stood the altar, three tiers of golden loaves shaped like crosses and doves and staffs.
Three hundred people sat eating, laughing, passing plates.
A four-piece band played "Mamma" from a low stage by the kitchen doors.
I stopped at the double doors with the green ledger under my arm.
I wore my father's black coat over a black dress.
My hair was pinned back with two steel hairpins that Marta had pushed into it that morning without a word.
Santino stood a step behind me, and I felt his steady heat against my back.
"Ready?" he said.
