Chapter 11: Blood Moon Gathering
The Blood Moon rose over Echo Hall's court the color of an open wound.
Nine packs stood in a great ring around the Moon Stone.
It was a tall gray slab set into the cobbles, worn smooth by a thousand years of palms.
Every Alpha in the mountains had come.
Hamish Wescott stood with the Ironridge delegation on the east side, his arms folded and his face blank.
He did not look at Rosalind.
She stood at the Luna's place beside the Stone in a plain green dress, with the folded speech in her sleeve.
Dalton stood on her right.
Jessamy stood on his other side, the circlet on her head, smiling gently at the crowd.
The Alpha of Redwater leaned on a pillar across the court, a lean man with a polite, cold smile.
The old she-wolf sat in the front row with Agnes beside her.
Edmund stood behind Dalton with his hands clasped, white at the knuckles.
Dalton lifted his chin to begin the opening words.
Jessamy stepped forward before he could.
"Alphas," she said. "Before we begin, I have something painful to say."
A murmur ran around the ring.
"I wanted to protect this pack from it," Jessamy said. "I wanted to keep it quiet. But I won't have the First Luna read a blessing over us under a lie."
Rosalind did not move.
Dalton's head turned slowly.
"Jess. What are you doing?"
"Telling the truth, my love."
Jessamy took a thin envelope from her coat and opened it.
She held up a glossy photograph so that the first rows could see.
