Chapter 13: The Last Page

Killian did not look at the floor, or at Cassidy, or at the man from the third floor in the corner.

He looked at me, and he started to talk.

"Two years ago, Finance sent me Dennis's mileage sheets with a note on them."

"I know about the mileage," I said.

"I didn't, until that week. I had signed every one of his sheets for eight months without reading past the total."

Dennis said quietly, "That's on me, not you."

"It's on both of us," said Killian. "I read them properly, finally, on a Thursday, and I took them to the vice president."

"You reported him," I said.

"Yes."

Cassidy made a small noise in her throat.

"The file said who flagged it," Killian went on. "And a flag from me would show my own signature on every sheet, so the next question was why I hadn't caught it sooner."

"So the file said what?"

"It said the flag came from the floor, unnamed."

I waited.

He had promised me he would not skip a line, and I watched him decide not to.

"The next afternoon Cassidy found me in the stairwell. Dennis was already gone from the building, and she asked me who had done it."

"And you said," I began.

"I said..." He stopped.

His jaw worked.

The lobby clock ticked, and the revolving door went around once with nobody in it.

"Say it," said Cassidy.
