Chapter 21: The Bill

Cassidy unzipped her bag and took out a thick bank envelope.

The whole floor had crowded into the little kitchen, and the vice president stood on a chair by the sink to see.

"Cash," said Cassidy. "In front of witnesses. You said itemized."

"I did."

"It's three thousand one hundred and two dollars."

I took the envelope.

It was heavy, and the teller's receipt was still clipped to the flap.

"I'm going to count it," I said.

"Please."

"Out loud."

"Please, Althea."

I spread a clean paper towel on the counter and laid the bills down in stacks.

"One hundred," I said.

"One hundred," said thirty people.

I did not ask them to join in. They just did.

It took two minutes to get to thirty-one hundred-dollar bills.

By the twentieth, the sales guys were shouting the numbers, and the intern had her phone out for the video.

"Three thousand one hundred," I said.

"Three thousand one hundred," said the kitchen.

Cassidy put her hand into her coat pocket and took out two crumpled singles, flat and warm.

"And two," she said.

I smoothed them out on the towel.

"Three thousand one hundred and two."

It went quiet.

I took out the green ledger, opened it to the page with her name, and wrote: Paid in full. Cassidy Dunne. 481 lunches, 1 tin, less $24 paid. In cash, in the kitchen, in front of the floor.
