Chapter 24: Seven Days
My daughter was born on a Sunday in August, at ten minutes to four in the morning.
Davis held my left hand for eleven hours.
Wanda held the right one for the last forty minutes, in her church hat, because she had come straight from a vigil and said she was not going to take it off for anybody.
"One more," the doctor said.
"I can't."
"You can," Davis said, with his forehead against mine. "You've done everything else."
"I hate you."
"Okay."
"I love you. Don't move."
"I'm not going anywhere."
I pushed, and the room filled with a thin, furious cry.
They laid her on my chest, wet and red-faced and shouting.
She had dark hair, and a frown, and two small fists that opened and closed on my collarbone.
I could not see for crying.
Wanda was sobbing out loud into her handkerchief.
Davis stood bent over the bed with one big hand cupped over the back of her head, and he did not say a word.
"Does she have a name?" the nurse asked.
"She does," I said.
I said it quietly, to my daughter's face.
It was my grandmother's name, and I had told no one.
Davis made a noise in his throat and turned away to the wall.
I let him have a minute.
At seven, Marilyn came to the doorway in a plain gray coat, without her pearls, and stayed there.
I had told her I would let her know when it was time.
"Do you want to come in?" I asked.
She took two steps and stopped.
She looked at the baby for a long while with her lips pressed together.
"She has Brent's chin," she said, in a very small voice.
"She does."
"I'll go now."
"Sit for five minutes," I said. "Please."
