Chapter 5: Sister

By Wednesday, the video of me dropping my ring into the donation bowl had four million views.

Strangers had written under it.

"Queen." "She walked out better than any of us would." "Where is her shop? I'm buying a sofa."

I had not slept since Lacey's porch.

She had gone through my purse, read my test and taken my socks.

At two in the morning I had moved the test into my coat's inner pocket, as if that could undo it.

I did not know what she wanted with any of it.

At nine in the morning, the new studio already had a line on the sidewalk.

Wanda unlocked the door and handed out orders.

"You," she said to me, "sit by the register and take the deposits. You," she said to Davis, "stay near the door and keep the men from touching the velvet."

"Yes, ma'am," Davis said.

I sat on the stool by the register with ginger tea and a plate of crackers Wanda had left on purpose.

A woman in a green coat put a hand on my arm.

"I'm on my third husband," she said. "Honey, I wish I'd had your timing."

By noon I had sold eleven custom orders and a full set of drapes for a lake house.

The bell rang again at twelve-thirty.

Brent walked in.

He had on his work jeans and a clean shirt, and he held his cap in both hands.

The studio went quiet.

People pretended to look at fabric.

"I need five minutes," he said.

"I'm working."

"Please, Elise."

Wanda moved her stool two feet closer.

Davis stopped folding a sample and stood still with his arms at his sides.

Brent noticed him. "I told you to be on the Carver job."
