Chapter 7: Flat Numbers

On Friday morning, Davis drove me to the clinic.

I had told him I was fine to drive, and he had said, "I'm sure you are," and held the passenger door open anyway.

I didn't argue.

My hands were shaking too much to argue.

He parked, turned off the engine and stayed in his seat.

"I'll be in the waiting room," he said. "If you want me."

"You don't have to ask what it is."

"I figure you'll tell me when you can."

I looked at his scarred knuckles on the steering wheel.

He had never once pushed me to talk.

"It's good news," I said. "I think. If it's real."

His face didn't change much, but something in it loosened.

"Then I'll wait for the rest," he said.

Inside, the receptionist slid a form across the counter.

I crossed out Lacey Dunbar's name in the sister line, then in the emergency contact line, then in the release line.

I signed all three, and my signature came out firm.

The receptionist took the sheet.

"Done. She can't call for anything now."

"Thank you."

The nurse drew my blood again, and I sat in the small exam room with a cotton ball taped to my arm.

I wasn't allowed to hope, so I counted the ceiling tiles instead.

Twenty-four.

The doctor came in with a folder and a smile.

She was a calm, quick woman in her fifties, and she had been my doctor for four years.

"Elise," she said. "Your levels doubled."

I put my hand over my mouth.

"They more than doubled since last Saturday, which is exactly what we want. This looks like a healthy, early pregnancy. We'll do an ultrasound in two weeks, and you should hear a heartbeat."
