Chapter 16: Served in the Kitchen
The man with the envelope came into the commissary on Thursday at ten, in the middle of the lunch prep, when all three of my cooks had their hands in something.
He wore a tie and a county badge on a lanyard, and he said my full name like a question.
"Joelle Ferrand Claiborne?"
"Ferrand," I said.
"Ma'am, I'm told you're the defendant." He held the envelope out at arm's length. "You've been served."
The oldest cook set down her knife.
The youngest one turned off the burner under the stockpot, which is what we do in my kitchen when something has gone wrong.
I took the envelope and he left without another word, and the bell over the front door rang behind him.
"What is it?" the youngest cook said.
"Priscilla's lawyer," I said. "She says I defamed her."
"With what?"
"With the truth, out loud."
I read the first page standing at the steel table.
The complaint said I had made false statements about Mrs. Claiborne's character in front of a hundred and ninety witnesses.
It asked for two hundred thousand dollars and a public retraction at the Garden Club banquet.
