Chapter 20: Greatest Hits

Caleb's POV

On day two, I was at the café at ten to seven, which is not a time I had ever seen on purpose.

The barista with the nose ring looked up from the espresso machine, and her eyebrows went into her hair.

"You're lost," she said.

"I need to ask you something. On day forty, you were outside with Sabrina, on your break."

"I'm on my break every day. Be more specific."

"She said Elliott was her second favourite face."

"Oh, that." She wiped her hands. "You're the guy who walked off."

"Yes."

"She chased you down the steps with a tart, you know. I watched from the window."

She shrugged.

"She had the box open, and she was shouting about the lemon curd."

I had not known that.

I stood with my hand on the counter and my own thermos in the other.

For once I did not tell the barista my order was wrong.

"What was the rest of the sentence?" I said.

"I don't know. I went back to the register."

"Do you remember anything else she said that day?"

The barista looked at me for a long moment, and then she reached under the counter.

She came up with a small green notebook, soft from handling, and put it in front of me.

"She keeps this here because her bag is a disaster," she said. "She never lets me read it. I read it."

I opened to the first page.
