Chapter 22: Day Sixty

I kissed the good side of his face first, because I'm not an animal.

It was the right cheek, the one without the bruise, and he made a small sound in his throat.

"Careful," Caleb said. "My lip."

"I know where your lip is."

"It's not in great shape."

"You're counting."

"I count everything. It's a defect."

"It's a hobby," I said. "I took it up before you."

He laughed, and the laugh hurt his lip, and he said "Ow" and laughed again.

I took hold of the front of his shirt and pulled.

It was his gray one, with six buttons.

I got through the first three before I noticed my hands were shaking.

He noticed too.

He covered them with his own.

"We can stop," he said. "I mean that. I'd rather have you stay than have this."

"You're checking in."

"I'm trying it out. How was it?"
