Chapter 6: The Collar

"I'm listening," I said. "Make it quick."

Sergio leaned back against the locked door.

"You think we lied to keep you small," he said. "We lied to keep you out of this."

"Out of what?"

"This room. These men. What happens to a girl they know belongs to me."

"I'm not a girl."

"No," he said. "I noticed. Yesterday."

Knuckles rapped twice on the door.

Sergio unlocked it, and Marco came in alone and shut it again.

His jaw was set, and a long red scratch from the dark-haired woman's nails ran down his forearm.

"She's gone," he said. "Nothing went further than what you saw. We were done with her before you opened the door."

"Your belt was open," I said to Sergio.

"I was going to hand her my card and tell her the club would pay for her taxi."

"That isn't what it looked like."

"It looked like what it was," Marco said quietly. "The last minute of a night she asked for. I didn't plan for you to walk in on it, little one. But I'm not sorry you did."

My throat tightened.

"You're not?"

"You didn't run," he said. "You walked up to us and said the worst thing you had, in front of forty people. Do you know how many of them would have done that?"

I stared at him.

I had been expecting a lecture, or a punishment, or a lie.

I had not been expecting to be told I was brave.

"I hate that you hid it," I said, and my voice broke. "I hate that I wasn't enough to be told."

"You were a child," Sergio said. "And then you weren't, a day ago."

"One day."

"One day we both noticed."

The room went very still.

Marco reached into his jacket pocket and took out a flat black box.

"We were going to wait," he said. "We changed our minds."

Inside lay a narrow collar of dark leather, soft and supple, with a small gold ring at the throat.
