I came down from the tower at dawn with my shoes in my hand.
The door of room 2B was standing open.
Chris was sitting on my bed.
Matt was leaning against the wall.
Neither of them had slept.
"You smell like him," Chris said, very quietly.
"I know."
"All over."
"I know, Chris."
"Did he throw you out?" said Matt.
"No."
"Did he say anything?"
"He said stay."
Chris's claws bit into my quilt.
"Then he's a liar and a coward," he said, "because he let that old woman say it to your face."
"He's here," Matt said.
He had gone completely still.
"Right behind you."
I turned.
Mr. Hunter stood in the corridor, in yesterday's shirt, with his hair a mess and his jaw dark with stubble.
He had followed me across the lawn.
I hadn't heard him.
"Miss Winslow," he said.
"Chloe," I said.
"Chloe." His eyes went over my shoulder.
"Mr. Maddox. Mr. Calloway."
