She Handed Me a Paper Plate, So I Canceled Her Whole Family novel · Chapter 7 of 24

Chapter 7: The Full Footage

The emergency board meeting started at eight on Wednesday, and my mother-in-law was already seated at the table.

She wore black and pearls and held a handkerchief in both hands.

Beside her sat a lawyer in a very expensive gray suit, and beside the lawyer sat my husband.

Nine members of my board of directors sat around the long glass table, looking at their folders.

"This is a family matter," the chairman said to me, with an apologetic grimace. "But three million views is three million views. They asked for a hearing, and I couldn't say no."

"Of course," I said. "I want to hear it."

I took my seat at the far end.

Daniel sat beside me with a laptop closed in front of him.

The lawyer opened with a smooth, grave voice.

"Mrs. Kittredge is a sixty-one-year-old widow. Yesterday, in her own home, in front of her friends, the CEO of this company came in with hired men and removed her late husband's china from her cabinet. She did this while Mrs. Kittredge asked her to stop."

Esther pressed the handkerchief to her eyes.

"The video is public," the lawyer said. "The reputational damage to Pathlight is real. We ask that Ms. Hartnell step aside as chief executive while the board conducts a review."

Brodie said nothing.

He sat with his hands folded and gazed at the table, the picture of a man too hurt to speak.

I almost admired it.

"Is that all?" I asked.

"There's the matter of the voting arrangement," the lawyer said, turning a page. "Mrs. Kittredge's family trust has an interest in the shares, and that interest should be recognized in the interim."

"That's the paper I never signed."
