Chapter 8: Why Couldn't You Stay Gone

Nobody on the field made a sound.

"Bina," Albert said slowly. "What are you talking about?"

Sabina did not look at him.

She stared at her mother, who still held Gran's tin in both hands, and her chin shook.

"Tell them," she said. "Tell them, Mom, or I will."

"Sabina, stop," Marilyn said.

Her voice was very quiet, and it had no warmth left in it.

"You're upset," she said. "You're not thinking."

"I've been thinking for two years!" Sabina's voice cracked wide open. "I found it in your desk when I was sixteen. I was looking for a stapler."

She laughed, a high, ugly sound, and wiped her face with the back of her wrist.

"It was a hospital paper, Dad. A release form. St. Anne's, twenty years ago. A baby girl, surrendered at the front desk. And the mother's name on it was hers."

Albert turned his head and looked at his wife.

"Marilyn."

"It's not what she says."

"The baby was a girl with gray eyes," Sabina said. "Mom wrote that part herself, on the back of the form. She wrote, she has my eyes."

Then she pointed at me.

Her finger shook.

"Look at her! Look at her eyes! Look at Mom's eyes!"

Every head on the field turned to me.

I stood very still.

It was the strangest thing I had ever felt.

Last February my grandmother had died in my arms, and I had thought there was no one left on earth who had a claim on me.

Gran had told me my mother was a young girl in trouble who could not keep me.
