Chapter 11: Care Home
Mitchell's POV
I left at five, before either woman woke.
Valerie was asleep on her stomach with one arm flung across my pillow, and her hair covered half her face.
I stood in the doorway longer than I should have.
My sheets smelled like her.
I had not let myself want anyone in the house in four years, and I had broken my own rule in under a week.
I put on my boots on the dock and drove out through the gate before the sun was fully up.
The care home was forty minutes inland, a low brick building with a flagpole and a circle of hydrangeas.
The night nurse was still at the front desk.
"I'm here about a resident," I said. "Her daughter's a friend of the family."
"Visiting hours aren't until nine."
"I'm not visiting. I need to ask who pays for her room."
She looked at me for a while.
I didn't have a speech ready.
I laid my driver's license on the counter, with my name and the Southampton address, and I said it again.
"Rainsford," she said. "I thought you looked familiar. Your mother was here for the gala in March."
"Who pays?"
She turned to her screen and tapped.
"The Rainsford Family Trust. It's a standing order, set up five years ago." She squinted. "Authorized and signed by Judith Rainsford. Nobody else can change or cancel it."
"Nobody? Not her sons?"
"It says here sole signatory. Is there a problem?"
"No." I put my license back in my wallet. "Did anyone ask about moving her this week?"
