Chapter 12: Judith

Valerie's POV

I woke up alone in Mitchell's bed with the sun in my eyes.

His side of the sheet was cold.

I pulled on the gray sweatshirt and went to the window, and I saw a silver sedan at the end of the road.

I saw Judith Rainsford standing in front of it.

I saw Mitchell's truck stop in front of her, and Mitchell get out.

I was down the stairs and into the main room before she had finished crossing the gravel.

Lila stood in the guest room doorway with the blanket around her shoulders, white-faced.

"Don't come out," I told her.

"She'll know I'm here."

"She'll know in a minute anyway."

The door opened, and Mitchell came in first, with his mother a step behind him.

Judith stopped on the threshold and looked around the room.

She looked at the stool, the dock window, the stairs, and the sweatshirt on me.

She did not look at me for long.

"Mitchell," she said. "I'd like a word."

"Say it here."

"I'd prefer privacy."

"Valerie lives here for now," he said. "Anything you say to me, she hears."

Judith put her purse on the counter.

It was the first time I had seen her without a coffee cup or a folder, and she looked older.

"Very well." She turned to me. "Ms. Marrin. I have a new offer."

"I don't want the check."

"It's not a check." She folded her hands. "Bennett tells me you have decided to leave my family in a disgraceful manner. I have seen the video, and I have seen your face, and I have thought about it for a week."

"I didn't push her."

"I am not going to argue with you about that." She said it quietly. "I'm going to ask you what you want."
