Mitchell's POV

My mother crossed the terrace in her silk with her pearls on, and two hundred people got out of her way.

I had never seen her walk so slowly.

She stopped in front of Bennett at the rail.

"Mom," he said. "Mom, you can't believe..."

"Sit down, Bennett."

"I'm not going to sit down while they..."

"You will sit down or you will be carried out. Choose."

He sat on a stone bench, with his hands hanging between his knees.

She took the microphone from the quartet's stand and held it in both hands.

"I'll be brief," she said.

The terrace was silent.

"My son Bennett has lied to this room, to a woman I did not welcome, and to a girl I have known since she was born. I have heard the proof. I believe it."

She looked at the managing partner.

"Counselor, you'll be hearing from me Monday."

"Yes, Judith."

"As trustee of the Rainsford Family Trust, I am removing Bennett from the family office, the foundation board and every account that carries our name. He will not sign for this house again."

Bennett looked up.

"Mom, the business..."

"The business was never yours. I let you believe it." She did not raise her voice. "I let you believe a great many things."

She turned to the guests.

"When Bennett was fourteen, a neighbor's son broke his arm on our stairs. Bennett was seen near them. I paid the family, and I told myself he had learned something."
