Chapter 5: Time of Surgery

The interview room had a steel table, three chairs and a window with the blind pulled down.

I sat with my cast stretched under the table and Hannah in the chair beside me.

The detective set a recorder between us.

"You're not under arrest, Mr. Carrow. You came in voluntarily and you can leave. But I'd like to hear your account."

"I'll tell you what I know," I said. "I didn't make that transfer."

"Your company says the login was yours."

"My login was on a laptop. The laptop was in my backpack when the van hit me."

"And where's the backpack now?"

I opened my mouth, and Hannah answered.

"In the St. Anne's trauma bay lockbox since 1:10 that afternoon," she said. "Inventory sheet signed by two staff. His phone, his wallet, his backpack and the laptop inside it."

The detective's pen stopped moving.

"You're the surgeon."

"Dr. Brooks. I took him into the operating room at 1:25. He had been intubated since 1:02 in the ambulance bay." She put a thin folder on the table. "He signed the release for these an hour ago. I read it to him first."

I had signed it with her watching, and I'd read every line.

"Anesthesia record," she said. "Operating notes. The time he left the room was 5:48."

The detective turned the pages slowly.

"The transfer was 2:14," he said.

"At 2:14 he had a femur open in front of four of us."

He looked at the page for a long moment.

Then he looked at me and nodded once.

"I believe you, Mr. Carrow. I still need to verify with the lockbox log." He glanced at the door. "That's actually why I asked you to come in today. Somebody else called me this morning."
