Chapter 16: The Rain
I put on my trousers and went down the stairs in the dark.
Penelope followed in my shirt with her phone in her hand.
"Don't open it," she said.
"She'll stand there all night."
"Then let her."
I opened it.
Sonia stood on the step in the rain.
Her white gown was black to the knees, and she had lost both shoes.
The red mark where the monitor had been showed on her ankle.
She saw Penelope on the stairs behind me, in my shirt, and her face did something I had never seen it do.
It crumpled.
"Wes," she said. "Please."
"How did you find this house?"
"It was in the folder. The Northlight folder, in year three. I memorized every address."
"You've been to Perry Street before?"
"I stood on the sidewalk outside it once," she said. "I thought, if he ever lets me in here, I'll know he trusts me."
The rain ran down her face.
I could not tell what was rain.
"You have thirty seconds," I said.
"I don't need them."
She dropped to her knees on the wet step.
Penelope made a small noise behind me.
"I did it all wrong," Sonia said. "I did everything wrong, and I know it. Take me back and I'll tell them everything. I'll tell them about Beck, the room, the contract. I'll go on any stage you choose."
"You already told them. In front of four thousand people."
"They'd have forgiven me!"
"For shaking my father's bed?"
"I never wanted that!"
"You asked how many people the room allows."
Her mouth opened.
She had no answer, and she knew it.
"Why?" I said. "You've been telling the cameras reasons for three weeks. Give me the real one."
"Because you were going to leave me."
