Chapter 22: Quiet

Claire asked me to come to Oak Park on Saturday, and she asked in a text of one line.

There is a tin for you. After that I won't ask for anything.

I went because Edith would have wanted it.

The house had been emptied in a week. The dining table was gone, and the pictures were off the walls, and the grandfather clock still stood in the hall, ticking to nobody.

The blue chair sat alone in the middle of the sitting room, with no boxes on it.

Claire stood in the kitchen doorway in jeans and a gray sweater.

I had never seen her in jeans.

Her hair was in a plain braid, and she wore no jewelry.

Her left sleeve was pushed up, and the wrist underneath was bare.

"It's in the freezer," she said. "She labeled it in March. Lemon, with your name."

She took the tin out and held it for a moment before she handed it over.

It was cold through my sleeve.

"Thank you," I said.

"I have a few things to say. You don't have to answer any of them."

"Go on."

She leaned against the counter.

"I gave the board my resignation on Wednesday. They accepted it. I sold most of my shares to pay the suppliers, and the rest will go to the Tolland penalties." She said it without any weight at all. "The penthouse belongs to the company, so it goes with it. I have an apartment I rented on Monday, one bedroom, and a car I own."

"Claire."

"It's not a sad story. It's a list." She almost smiled. "The divorce is filed. I won't contest anything. You keep what you earned and a half of what you didn't, and my lawyer has instructions."
