Chapter 24: Her Plan
Nathan's POV
I signed the contract at ten past nine, before the coffee in my office had cooled.
Danielle took the pages and checked the signature with the same care she gave a bid.
"Good," she said. "That's one."
"There's another?"
"There's a plan. Come to lunch."
I had expected a restaurant.
She walked me three blocks from Rowan Group in the thin morning light, past the river and a construction fence.
We stopped at a corner with a hot dog cart and a striped umbrella.
My left hand had finally healed to three pink lines.
"Two with everything?" the vendor asked, before we had said a word.
"Not yet," Danielle said, and she turned to me. "First I have something to tell you. I'd like you to be standing up when you hear it."
"I'm standing."
"Good. Don't sit down."
She put her hands in her coat pockets.
"At the next board meeting I'm going to propose that you become president of Rowan Group's operations.
"Not vice president. President, with a vote and equity."
I opened my mouth.
"I'm not finished. After that, in two years or three, I intend to propose a seat for you on the main board. I've already counted the votes. I'll have them."
"Danielle."
"I'm telling you this to your face, on a street corner, in daylight," she said. "No one is deciding it behind a door while you stand outside and wait to be surprised. I plan your promotion, and I'm telling you the plan. You can say no."
