Chapter 7: Fourteen Months of Lemon

Cain's POV

She left the notebook on the back seat, and I read it.

I'd like to say I didn't.

I opened it before Gus had finished parking the car.

It was a small black notebook with a rubber band around it.

My initials were on nearly every page.

The first line said: C.R. Umbrella. Month four.

Under it, in her round, fast handwriting: He held it over me for twenty minutes outside the Aldine. He got soaked. Owed. Settled: made him tea. Not in contract.

I remembered that night.

Gus had forgotten the car, so I had the umbrella. I had thought nothing of it.

I turned the page.

C.R. Coat. February. Owed. Settled: shoveled his steps.

I had never asked her to shovel my steps.

She had done it before dawn and left unseen. I had assumed the doorman did it.

Page after page. A cab fare. A cold. The time I said her name too softly in a meeting and a man stopped talking.

One page was dated the night of the Mayor's dinner.

L.S. wants to know why she left. Asked me to ask him. Not in contract. Not mine to ask.

Lydia had asked her to ask me. Mara hadn't.

I put the page down and found I was relieved, and I disliked that.

Every kind thing she had done, and every kind thing I had done by accident, sat in the same neat column.

She had written down every one of them as a debt she owed.
