Chapter 29: The Wing
On Wednesday night Bernadette went to a commissioners' dinner in Sandusky, and Stefan let me into the Wing with the master key.
We had a reason, and neither of us said it was the only one.
"The agency inspector wants to see the east dormitory beds," he said in the dark stairwell. "To confirm the mattresses are standard."
"Are they?"
"I have no idea," Stefan said.
"You're a terrible liar, Gorski."
"I'm trying to improve," he said.
The east dormitory was as we had left it, three iron beds in a row and a floor of three hundred and twelve boards.
Moonlight came through the tall window.
I walked to the bed by the glass, mine, and put my hand on the cold frame.
"I slept here for three years," I said. "I used to count the ceiling tiles."
"How many?"
"Sixty-four. I got the same number every night."
He stood in the doorway, with his shoulders filling it.
"I'd like to say something," he said, "and I'd like it to be the last thing I say about my mother for a while."
