Chapter 12: Front Seat
Rhea walked past her down the passage and shut her bedroom door without a sound.
Mira went back into the room and found Dev sitting up on the floor with the blanket around his waist.
He was wide awake.
"I heard," he said.
"She says to ask you what you saw from the front seat."
His face did not change. It simply stopped moving.
"Not here," he said. "Come downstairs."
The garage was cold and smelled of rubber and old oil.
Harish's car stood where it always stood, nose to the wall. Dev opened the rear door, and she saw that he was not going to sit anywhere else.
She got in beside him and pulled the door shut.
For a long time he said nothing.
The light through the high window made a pale square on the dashboard.
"I was fifteen," Dev said.
Mira kept still.
"There was a wedding at a farmhouse on the Mehrauli road. A cousin of Papa's. Maa had a fever, so she stayed home." He was looking straight ahead at the back of the empty driver's seat. "Papa drank a great deal that night. I didn't know how much. I was fifteen. I thought it was how men behaved at weddings."
"Dev."
"Let me say it once. Straight through."
She nodded.
"He made me sit in front. He said it was time I learned the road. It was past midnight, and there was fog, and the road bends hard by the old tomb." He swallowed. "I saw their headlights come around the bend. I saw him not brake."
His hands lay open on his knees, and they were shaking a little.
"It was a small white car. A man and a woman, and nobody in the back. I never saw their faces. I saw the windscreen turn white."
