Chapter 24: Front Seat, Again

On the last Sunday of the year, Dev drove his father to the temple.

Mira sat beside him in the front seat.

Harish sat behind them with his hands on his knees. He had not asked for the window, and no one had offered it.

The road was quiet. The fog had not yet lifted from the trees along the avenue.

"Slower at the bend," said Harish.

"I know, Papa."

"I know you know."

Dev eased his foot off the pedal. The needle dropped, and the car curved round the corner at a walking pace.

Mira watched the road, not the old man in the mirror.

She had thought about this Sunday for days. She had thought she would feel triumph, or at least relief.

She felt only the plain weight of three people in a car.

"Dev," Harish said from the back.

"Yes, Papa."

"On the sixth, when I stand in that court. I will say it to her there."

Nobody spoke.

"Rhea will be in the second row with her lawyer. I have asked."

Harish cleared his throat.

"I do not expect her to look at me. I will say it to the back of her head if I must."

"That's enough, Papa. That's the right way to start."

"It is not enough. It is a start."

Mira heard something in his voice she had not heard before.
