Chapter 12: Fifty Thousand
Gwen's studio was on the second floor of a converted bank in Venice.
The sign on the door said Gwen Tolbert Birth, in soft gold letters.
I went on Thursday afternoon, and I went in through the front.
Jenna waited downstairs in the car with the engine running.
My phone was in my coat pocket with the recorder on.
The receptionist looked up and her face went tight.
"She isn't taking walk-ins."
"She'll take this one," I said.
She picked up her desk phone and murmured into it.
A moment later the inner door opened, and Gwen stood in it.
She wore pale blue.
She had done her hair.
"Willa," she said. "Come in. Please. I'm so glad you came."
The room behind her was all white sofas and dried pampas grass.
A big framed photo hung over the desk of Gwen holding a newborn, both of them glowing.
She closed the door and turned the lock.
"I don't have to be gentle with you," Gwen said.
She had dropped the soft voice at once.
She sat on the edge of her desk and folded her arms.
"My lawyer sent you a letter. You've read it."
"I read it."
"Then you know what happens Saturday if you open your mouth."
"What happens?"
"I sue you for everything you will ever make. Your art, your little freelance account, whatever your parents leave you. I don't need to win. I need to bury you in fees until you're begging."
"That's what you want to tell me."
"No."
She reached behind her and took a folder from the desk.
