Chapter 15: Live
Willa's POV
Gwen laughed.
It came out high and thin, and it carried through the microphone on her lapel.
"That is fabricated," she said. "Everyone, please. Anyone can type a message. We live in a world of fakes."
Her hands were moving too fast.
"I never wrote that to anyone."
"You wrote it to Dean," I said. "Patricia read it the night before my son was born."
"Patricia is confused. Patricia is grieving too."
Patricia stood beside me on the stage with her chin up.
"I read it, Gwen," she said. "I read it twice."
Gwen turned on her.
"After everything I did for your family."
"Yes," Patricia said. "After that."
I stepped closer to the edge of the stage.
"Let's do it simply," I said. "Six hundred people are here, and forty thousand are watching. You sell a sleep tea called Moon Blend to pregnant women."
"It is a gentle herbal blend."
"Tell them what's in it."
"Chamomile, lemon balm, a proprietary..."
"Blue cohosh," I said. "And pennyroyal."
Nobody moved.
Somebody near the front whispered it again.
"Pennyroyal."
I went on.
"Tell the room that's safe for a woman at thirty-nine weeks. Say it into the camera. Say it on your own stage."
Gwen opened her mouth.
She looked at the red light.
She looked at the six hundred faces, and I watched her work out that every answer cost her something.
"Women have used herbs for thousands of years," she said. "The medical system wants you to forget that."
"Is it safe for a pregnant woman?"
"It is natural."
"Is it safe?"
"It's not poison!"
Her voice cracked on the last word.
