Chapter 24: The Next Invitation
The print shop on Route 9 was still open all night.
It was ten to four on a Sunday morning in October, almost a year to the day.
The same clerk stood behind the counter with the same sleepy face.
He looked at the proof on the screen, then at me.
"Ma'am," he said slowly. "Have I seen you before?"
"Once."
"You printed a hundred and twelve of something."
"A hundred and twelve again."
He laughed so hard he had to hold the counter.
Sam stood behind me in his canvas jacket, with a thermos in each hand.
Bev leaned on the doorframe, eating a doughnut.
"It's the exact same shop," she said. "I want it on record that I called this."
"You called nothing," said Sam.
"I called it in my heart."
The machine began to hum.
The first card slid out of the tray, still warm.
I picked it up.
On the front, edge to edge, was a photograph.
It showed two hands resting on a wooden table.
One was broad, with a scar across the knuckles from a pruning saw.
One was mine, with a pale line across the finger where a band had once sat.
Each hand wore a plain gold ring, and the rings were not hammered, and neither one had a nick.
Under the photo, in small type, were the words Leah and Sam, Saturday, November 6, Fisk Orchard.
On the back, in Delaney's handwriting, the words Come and see for yourselves.
