Chapter 20: Premiere Night

Mara's POV

Pia pinned the last curl in my hair at six and stepped back to look.

"Green dress," she said. "He's going to forget his own name."

"He has a name to remember. It's famous."

"Stop. Breathe. You look like a woman who owns a house."

I laughed, and my voice shook only a little.

Keith was waiting at the foot of the stairs in a black suit with no tie.

He looked up, and for a moment he forgot how to close his mouth.

"Well," he said.

"Well?"

"I'm going to have to be careful on that carpet."

"Why?"

"I'm going to want to carry you off it."

Pia coughed behind me and disappeared into the kitchen.

The premiere was at a theater downtown, a hundred feet of red carpet and a wall of photographers three deep.

Ashton and Vera's drama opened at eight.

Our car pulled up at the curb at seven, because the show had asked for us together.

Keith got out first.

He walked around the car and opened my door and held out his hand.

I took it, and I did not let go.

The flashes began like hail.

"Keith! Keith, over here!"

"Mara! Mrs. Crewe! Is it true you're still in love with your ex?"

"Look this way, Mara!"

I felt Keith's hand tighten around mine.

A woman in the front row leaned over the rope with a microphone.

"Mrs. Crewe, how does it feel to be on the carpet for his show?"

"Her name is Mara," Keith said.

He said it to the microphone, pleasantly, and the whole row went quiet.
