Chapter 18: Dawn Patrol
At four in the morning the Fiesta field was dark, and eighty balloons lay flat on the grass in the cold.
The pepper lay at the end of the third row, red and enormous in the work lights.
Seven pickers in matching Armijo Farms caps held her mouth open for the fan.
The foreman stood beside the chase truck with a laminated card in his hand.
"Patrona," he said to me, solemnly. "Today I am Chase."
"You know the call signs?"
"The patron wrote them for me." He held up the card. "Chase, I have you. Chase, I am on the road. Chase, I am very hungry."
"That last one isn't in the manual."
"It is the most important one," he said.
I laughed, and my hands loosened on my clipboard.
Beatriz Armijo came across the grass at half past four.
She wore her black cardigan, flat shoes and a wool shawl, and she crossed the grass without looking down.
Eloy held the basket steady while she looked at it.
